Rather, the SPE serves as a cautionary tale of what might happen to any of us if we underestimate the extent to which the power of social roles and external pressures can influence our actions. The SPE was a study conducted at Stanford University over six days, August , , designed and conducted by me, as principal investigator, along with my research team of graduate students, Craig Haney and William Curtis Banks, undergraduate David Jaffe, and prison consultant, Carlo Prescott.
It was an exploratory investigation of the extent to which the power of situational forces could transform individual behaviors of participants. Twenty-four college students, recruited from a newspaper ad to participate in a study of prison life, first completed a battery of psychological tests and surveys in order to establish that they were healthy and normal, and had not had any prior experience of breaking the law. These students were then randomly assigned the roles of prisoner and guard.
The guards worked 8-hour shifts, while the prisoners lived full time in a mock prison setting created in the basement of the Stanford psychology department. Full details of this study are available in my book The Lucifer Effect and online at www.

It was no wonder: More than a quarter of the prisoners , people, i. During the first six years of the Third Reich’s existence, few women were taken to concentration camps. With the increase of terror in the spring of , it became necessary to create a separate camp for female prisoners. Originally the camp was apt for housing 10, people.
Most of them reported for duty answering the call of “patriotic” newspaper ads, many young women sought independence from their families, others were attracted by the relatively high salary. Although the SS female overseers received an SS uniform and an SS wage, being women, they were not allowed to become SS members with equal rights and to give orders to male members.
Besides hunger and illness, many fell victim to the brutality of the SS female overseers. The former were escorted by experienced SS female overseers. They took over the internal control of the women’s camp that had been already officially founded in the main camp of Auschwitz. This command structure resulted in gender rivalry.
SS officers openly protested and were not willing to follow the orders of a woman.

Similar structures[ edit ] Bentham always conceived the Panopticon principle as being beneficial to the design of a variety of institutions in which surveillance was important, including hospitals, schools, workhouses, and lunatic asylums, as well as prisons. In particular, he developed it in his ideas for a ” chrestomathic ” school one devoted to useful learning , in which teaching was to be undertaken by senior pupils on the monitorial principle , under the overall supervision of the Master; and for a pauper “industry-house” workhouse.
It burned down in Designed by William Strutt , and constructed in , it had fallen into disuse by the beginning of the 20th century and was demolished in It was considered a model facility at the time. The Panopticon has been suggested as an “open” hospital architecture: Hospitals required knowledge of contacts, contagions, proximity and crowding Criticism and use as metaphor[ edit ] Main article: Panopticism “Contrasted Residences for the Poor”: Whereas Bentham himself regarded the Panopticon as a rational, enlightened, and therefore just, solution to societal problems, his ideas have been repeatedly criticised by others for their reductive, mechanistic and inhumane approach to human lives.
This means that the Panopticon operates as a power mechanism.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of public access to private prison contracts, most of the details are unknown. Shortly before her death, the woman reported that she had been raped and assaulted by male inmates who were housed in the same cell block. She also reported being sexually humiliated by a GEO guard after reporting to the warden that guards allowed male and female inmates to have sex.
A state audit showed that the jail barely kept the minimum number of guards required in the contract. Successive California governors have taken thousands from private prison corporations. Their lobbying operation, however, is much bigger than giving money to a couple of Golden State governors.

Miller, 54, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassing communications and received one year’s probation after getting charged with felony custodial sexual misconduct in fall A total of 18 cases involving 30 corrections employees were referred to the Elmore County district attorney’s office in the past five years, according to figures provided to AL. Bentley’s office released the information after the DOJ issued a report in January finding that Tutwiler staff sexually abused and sexually harassed inmates with impunity for more than two decades.
It had been a long journey for Miller, who was years-old when he started working for the DOC. Formerly a textile factory worker, Miller took the state job because of its benefits. Early on, Miller showed a knack for paperwork. He knew how to type so he worked in the prison’s administrative office where he interacted with his bosses and filled out reports and other documents that go hand-in-hand with the day-to-day operations of a prison.
Miller began climbing the DOC ladder, working his way up from prison guard to sergeant to lieutenant and, finally, to captain — the highest ranking guard in any Alabama prison. The sentence was to be served on at least 15 consecutive weekends.
That did not happen here. A third officer, Shaun Lowe, was placed in a diversion program for a role in obstructing the investigation. Coyle said Gibbs deserved a different sentence, because he had not accepted responsibility. Why is one in 10 Philly inmates still confined in the hole? It was not until that she saw her mother again and learned the truth. By then Helga had moved to Italy, trying to assume a new identity.
